December 2008

I have been in the country now for almost a month and loving every moment of it! It took about a week to get over the jet lag, and up to that point, every time I got into a car I instantly fell asleep!
Some of the events in the first few weeks included the following:
A basketball game between Gold Coast Blaze (the local team) and a team from Townsville.
Spending time at Marthas chruch on previous sundays and for Christmas events. This is where you can find local celebrities (as shown by a previous post!)!
Lots of coffee at Zarraffas! They do very good drinks other than coffee. We seem to spend a lot of time here catching up with Marthas family, or her friends who have come home from overseas for the festive season! Her friends live in UK, Peru, Canada and other places in Australia.
Martha and her sister patrol the beach on occasion as volunteer lifesavers with their surf club. I spent an afternoon with them on the beach one sunday.
The Sunday before Christmas we ventured down to Burleigh to watch the Christmas Carols and fireworks, however, we arrived too late and missed it all. Instead we watched the moon rising over the ocean, so not all was lost!
I have been able to catch up with an old Tecumsehrian! Calie and I have made numerous trips including Panaroma View, Christmas shopping and Zorbing! It's been great to see her again after her time spent at camp in 2006.
A trip down to the border of Queensland and New South Wales was enjoyed last week in the immense heat. Thankfully the beach is never far away to cool off! There haven't been many days where I haven't taken a trip to the beach to cool down! Thanks Martha for driving!!
Christmas was a very strange occasion in the heat, but very much enjoyed! Santa made an appearance on the beach, and the hat from Santa was by request, worn on the beach!
The New Year Celebrations were in one of Marthas friends back yards with a BBQ and beer of course! We celebrated at midnight by watching fireworks, and featuring on BBC Radio Lincolnshire! When the party finished we headed to another of Marthas friends, JD, where we would be staying. Here the party continued, with numerous calls abroad and a trip to Broadwater. Unfortuantely, the beach was just a little too far to visit at 2am.
If you would like to see more pictures from this months events, please follow the links below. They will direct you to facebook where my photos are. You can view them even if you aren't a member of facebook!

And tonight I fly north to Cairns, so watch out for the next posting, I am now moving to a different part of OZ.....!
