Western Australia via New Zealand - November 2009

November started with a short trip to Christchurch, New Zealand to enable me onto a tourist visa for Australia. I spent the week with Teresa, Arts & Crafts director 2007.

On 6th November, I travelled to Perth to stay with the Dalton's, TAG Directors 2009 and their 5 children (who all also were at camp 2009). It was a couple of days before Flora came over from Sydney. The week and a half spent at the Dalton's was very eventful. We played lego, dolls, chase in the garden and many other childrens games. As adults we also engaged in a very quick game of cluedo, despite Jamie trying to follow the rules!! Our time spent at the Dalton's provided us with great food, great hospitality and of course, great company! It definitely served as a great beginning to our Great Australian Adventure!

While in Perth, we had a few nights in the city with friends from Sydney, and took in the sights of the city, Fremantle, and Fremantle Prison. We also caught up with Stef, Counselor, 2006-2007 on a few occasions.

On Monday 16th November at 6am our Western Xposure Perth to Broome tour began. We joined 8 others on a 3000km journey from city to beach, to national park and ending in a the small town of Broome. Along the way we made some great friends and took in some amazing scenery. Here are some of the events that took place along the way:

  • Karijini National Park - We spent 3 nights sleeping in the great outdoors and making small treks to cool off in little scenic gorges. Our campsite was surrounded by bush fires during our stay, but thankfully did not effect us!

  • Dolphins at Monkey Mia - early in the morning the dolphins come right up to the beach to visit humans and allow them to be fed. They came on 2 occasions while we were there and we could see them up close.

  • Sandboarding - What great fun this was, after a few attempts we all became pros!!

  • Pinacles - Strange rock formations in the desert was the first stop on our tour.

  • Coral Bay - Snorkeling in the Ningaloo Reef. We saw spectacular Coral and lots of fish that swam with us. We took a trip on a glass bottom boat to get closer to the marine life.

  • Turquoise Bay - The explanation is in its name, a beautiful beach with crystal clear water, a great place to relax and take in some rays!

  • A few good nights! - After bars shut and the sun goes down, we headed out a few times to the beach to continue the party, we were fortunate to have some awesome people on our tour who made these nights very memorable.

We are currently in Darwin until 30/11 when our next tour to Alice Springs begins. Western Australia is now covered, we saw so much and enjoyed it all, but this is only just the beginning, keep posted for another update on the great Australian Adventure soon!

THE GREAT AUSTRALIAN ADVENTURE - Western Australia

October - The little one gets old!

This month draws a close to living in Sydney and working in Australia. The time around work has been filled well and there is lots to look forward to in the rest of 2009!

October Partying Adventures

What a month for partying! We have definitely put Sydney to the test.... and we can confirm, it doesn't have anything on London! Here are a few highlights!

Flora's 25th. We celebrated in style at Chinese Laundry. On Flora's actual birthday I cooked a lasagne and we spent the evening surrounded by balloons and wearing paty hats!

Trinity bar for drinks on a few occasions, one of which we participated in a quiz, not your average backpacker or even British quiz.... we didn't do very well!

With the return of Zoey from my first time in Sydney, we partied in Kings Cross, probably the busiest in Sydney. We visited a few drifferent bars this evening, none of which were much to report on!

MAMMA MIA. I know everybody will be wondering what this is doing on my blogg.... Well it is true, I did go and see the award winning stage show. I can confirm, I did not pay for a ticket, it was free from work so I thought I best make the most of the opportunity. I can't say I completely enjoyed the show, but it had its comical parts!

Our Sydney leaving do (my second Sydney leaving do). We started at the bowls club opposite my work and then headed to Nikki's house before finishing the night at Candy's in the early hours of the morning. A great send off!

The Great Australian Adventure

The past month has been spent comparing quotes, searching trips and tours and finalising the great australian adventure we will embark on in November. Below is the itinerary for the trip. If you haven't already received it via email, here it is. Now you know exactly where we are until the new year. Look out for the next post for how the adventure is going! I can't guarantee an update before we arrive in the Gold Coast on 23rd December, but I will try!

Work

After completing a whole month at Pinpoint, things were going well. I had taken on many new programs which meant lots more calls. The team in the office was a lot smaller than last time but there were a few familiar faces and some new ones that made it a lot of fun! When the start of the great australian adventure was decided, I have two weeks notice to work so they were aware. Of course, they let me go before, and they could again. I made it as far as the afternoon the day before my last day when I was advised I was not going to be needed the following day. I was so close to being the one who left willingly!

Pinpoint has given me a few months of work while in Australia and was a great place to work. This is mainly thanks to Andy, Robin and Cammille. What awesome people to work with!

Future Plans

If you want a copy of the full schedule then please email me on bensb85@aim.com and I will forward it to you. Here are a few highlights of what is planned:
10 Day Tour from Perth to Broome
6 Day Tour from Darwin to Alice Springs
Avatar Boat Trip on the Whitsunday's
Fraser Island Self Drive Trip

These plans are all confirmed and this is where we will be until January 5th. Once we fly to Auckland the uncertainty begins again as we begin a new adventure in New Zealand!

The Return to Australia... September 2009

Now that the first month has passed since arriving back in Sydney, time is really starting to fly by. I have been working since I arrived back and filling my time with as much as I can. The weather started at the beginning of September with warm sunshine entering the spring season. As the month went on, the clouds and rain came. It has not been good weather like I would expect from a country like Australia, especially seeing as how I am following the summer and godo weather. I am now heading into my fourth summer in a row! :)

Passing time in Sydney

Here's a few of the little things I have been passing my time with in September:

Catching up with some of the people I worked with in March: Andy, Robin and Cammille.

Avenue Q, a Broadway production touring in Sydney. Avenue Q stars puppets and it was a really enjoyable show!

Took a trip to visit Flora's mum's cousin in Manly where we were able to see views of the city from beyond the harbour.

Free tickets from work to see the guest preview of Surrogates, New Bruce Willis movie!

The Dust Storm that took Sydney by surprise. That was an impressive sight, to wake up and the sky be completely orange!

The Broadway Wedding - 27th September 2009

The weekend started with an early flight from Sydney to Melbourne on Saturday morning. Our reunion started with Kim and Chris who picked us up from the airport. We then picked up Robbie, and then on to see Theresa and Major Foster at Kim's house. We stayed at in a little apartment that night where we awaited the arrival of Martha.

We spent the morning of the wedding being escorted by Aaron around wineries in Yarra Valley. The rest of the day was amazing, a grand wedding and reception. The evening entertainment saw the Tecumseh crew taking over the dance floor for the Cha Cha Slide as true tecumseherians! It was a great time to catch up with old Tecumseh friends and enjoy being present at a wedding of an awesome friend. Here's to many happy years of marriage Mr and Mrs Broadway!

After the wedding we spent a day on the puffing billy train, an old steam train on the Dandenong mountain. A fun with to end an amazing weekend.

Future Plans

Plans are currently being set in stone for the great australian adventure due to commence in mid-November. Check out the next post for a detailed itinerary!

After that it's onto New Zealand with no confirmed date of departure.

A summer that if you blink, you miss.

Since the past post, I have flown from Melbourne to Kuala Lumpa to London for a surprise visit home. From then onto New York for camp, 2 months later from New York to London for another quick visit home, to Kuala Lumpa to Melbourne to Sydney, which is where I currently am.

Here's a little more in depth.

From Australia to Home

The last of Australia involved a night out with the flexirent crew before my departure. This was a great night by all in St. Kilda. Everyone was under the impression that I was flying to America while I was actually partying away in Melbourne still. It was then 2 days later that I flew to London via Kuala Lumpa for a week full of surprise visits! I arrived home at approximately 9pm after a long journey of shuttles, planes, trains, buses and taxis. Left all my luggage outside the back door and crept into the house, poked my head around the lounge door and said 'hiya'. Mum and Dad were shocked with mum's words 'where did you come from'. Of course they weren't expecting to see me until sometime in 2010! Emma was also home so it was then onto surprise her!

Surprise visits TOP 3
1. Carol Thursby - On a visit to the Tyas household, I knew Carol would be there. Dawn welcomed me in and i made my way through the house to where Carol was cleaning out the cats. She looked up and said 'Oh, hi Ben' as if I hadn't even been away. She went back to cleaning when she suddenly realised I shouldn't have been there and looked back in astonishment!! Perfect double take!!
2. Kathleen Albans - I arrived late back for dinner. Mum and Dad were in the garden with Kathleen and Dave. Kathleen was facing the entrance to the garden, and when I appeared from round the corner, she looked amazed as if I were a walking hologram!
3. Owen Tyas - On the first visit to the Tyas household, with Ian knowing I was on my way, Dawn opened the door and was shocked to see me. When Owen came running to see who had arrived he almost fell over backwards when he realised it was me stood at the door!

I caught up with friends, surprising them in the 6 days I was home, and even extended my stay so I could celebrate Waby and Woolley's birthdays before flying off for camp. Oliver had learnt to walk and was growing up extremely fast!

CAMP TECUMSEH 2009, The Last...?

This summer went by so quickly, if you blinked you would have missed it. I was blessed to have such an awesome team at the pool this summer, Armand, Garland, Heather, Monthy, Sky, Tiffany, and Zoe. Each of them an asset to Tecumseh pool this summer. I had so much fun with them and there was never a day that went by that if I turned up to the pool unhappy I would leave in the same way.

We successfully planned and carried out 6 dive shows for the pool party and managed to squeeze in a trip bowling, where I proved I wasn't just the best at swimming. They all wondered why I took them bowling until I beat them all! The team went from strength to strength as the summer progressed and to leave camp this year was difficult! Where will next summer lead is the question on everyone's minds, if you have an answer, please tell me, I have no idea!!!

Once camp had finished, it was a quick trip home for Shona's wedding and a birthday trip to Thorpe Park thanks to Waby and Woolley. Then it was back off into the air to continue in Australia. I landed in Melbourne on Friday September 4th at 5.40am. I called Pinpoint (where I worked in Sydney in March) at 10am. I got on a flight to Sydney at 12.30 and when I landed I had a voicemail asking me to start work on Monday.

So here I am, in a house in Surry Hills near the centre of Sydney, and I will be working here until my visa expires in December before the real travels begin.

The future plan:

Still to travel the rest of Australia
Onto New Zealand
Then home through Asia

The final chapter of Australia, part 1

Work
A new job, a new start, at Flexirent! An inbound call centre. But I’ll not waste time boring you about that. The job started 4th May, and it’s for 8 weeks, thankfully Chris, Gemma, Flora and I all managed to get a job at the same place! Pretty good when Flora and I didn’t even apply for the position! We work in a team of 10, mostly backpackers so it’s good fun. We have had a few nights out after work, one at the weekly hostel quiz one week. We don’t actually have a boss, he lives in Sydney, and he came down to train us before leaving 2 weeks later, leaving us to fend for ourselves! In summary, I work with great people and it pays! Having said that, there's a possibility of a job in Sydney on my return in September.

Melbourne Activities
Here are some of the activities that have been enjoyed whilst in melbourne:
  • AFL. Australian Football. Chris, Kenty and I went to see a match at the Melbourne Criket Ground (MCG) and became keen supporters of the game. Chris attached himself to Hawthorn and I to Carlton. The game we watched was described by many footy fans as one of the best of the season with a close score all the way to the end.
  • Nights out in Pugg Mahonnes, Chapel Street and St. Kilda. We enjoyed an evening at the Espy watching live bands on our short trip to St Kilda.
  • Quiz: Our hostel hosts a quiz each Thursday. There is lots of opportunity to win free beer, which we do very well at! We have come 3rd on 2 occassions. Our work colleagues all joined us one Thursday.

  • Exploring adventures with Kim have led us to 1000 steps, mount Dandenong and Outback Jacks, a restaurant where they have 'Jack's challenge'. Can you eat a 1kg steak in 30mins? If you can, you get it half price, and a t-shirt! I completed the task... it wasn't easy!

  • Yarra Bike Ride with Flora, Dawn and Tracey. We cycled for almost 3 hours along the Yarra River, cirlcing the city. Lots of fun was had on the tandum!!
Wilsons Promontory
1 3 man campervan, 5 people, 400 kilometres and 3 days., the most southern point of mainland Australia. A weekend like no other. We drove down to the prom on the Friday evening and watched as Gemma and Chris attempted to put up their tent in the pouring rain. Unfortunately, it did not survive. This meant 5 of us had to sleep in the 3 man camper! On Saturday we awoke to discover the campsite was at the bottom of Mount Oberon and the weather was on and off, rain for 5 minutes then clear skies and so on! We visited Squeaky Beach and Picnic Bay, and realised our gas stove didn’t work. Cheese sandwiches for lunch and dinner. We managed to find a BBQ at the campsite on Sunday and ate bacon sandwiches for breakfast and lunch. We walked up mount Oberon and watched as one way the clouds were dark grey, and another way the sky was completely blue! There were some spectacular views but it was similar to the Lake District with the cold wind blowing! The weekend was a great success despite the challenges.

Great Ocean Road & The Grampians
1 3 man campervan, 6 people, a whole load of kilometres and 4 days! We covered the great ocean road, the Grampians National Park and even fit in Ballarat on the way back to Melbourne. This time there was an extra body so we invested in a tent which Gemma and Chris kindly slept in all weekend. The temperature dropped very low at night time; after a cold sleepless night on Friday, Dawn created a duvet from sheets for the four of us in the van to get under to share body warmth! We started in Geelong on Friday and started the great ocean road on Saturday morning. We stopped at Bells Beach (world famous surfing beach), Aireys Inlet Lighthouse, Otway Ranges - Erskin Falls & Teddy's lookout, Lorne, Shoak Falls, Kenneit River (for lunch), before finally arriving at the 12 Apostles, London Bridge and the Arch. The road is long and winding but is home to some stunning views! If you have never heard of the 12 apostles, check out the pictures, they are awesome land blocks left from erosion in the ocean. An evening enjoying the warmth of the Warranambool hotel bar for most of the evening before heading back to the cold of the campsite. We left Warranambool on Sunday early to look for whalesat Logans beach, none to see though unfortunately. It was then onto teh Grampians via Tower Hill reserve crater walk where we spotted a koala, many emus and a wallaby with a baby in its pouch. We stopped for a pint in the Stump Pub, the oldest licensed pub in Victoria. We found another pub to sit in to pass the eveing before the cold night ahead! On Monday we got up early and beat the weatehr, we managed to complete the pinnacle walk through the Grand Canyon before the heavens opened which was a stunning walk! We managed to attempt the Silverline Falls, Reids lookout and the Balconies during the rain but the weather did not allow us to enjoy the views so much! The rain stopped in the afternoon for us to check out McKenzie falls which were spectacular! It was then a long drive back to the city to take showers and get a good nights sleep!!

Future Plans
With only 1 day before I fly to America for the summer, it seems like the past 6 months has flown by! There are many memories from the travels so far and I have met some great people! The next 3 months will feel like I am at home, but the travels will continue in September when I land in Melbourne on September 2nd! Where from there…
…who knows!!

April - Melbourne

What a month!! It all started with the loss of my job in Sydney which in 5 days landed me in a new part of Australia. Within 5 days of losing my job I bought a plane ticket, packed up, had a leaving do and moved to Melbourne for my next adventure! And here we are 3 weeks later (end of April), still jobless! But thanks to not having to pay rent in Sydney, I am still managing to live comfortably on the money I saved while working.
The move of course meant I had to leave the 404 family. A great 2 months was had living at Base and I met some awesome people over that time. They definitely made my time in Sydney one of the best experiences of my life and I very much look forward to meeting them all again one day in England… Sherwood Forest reunion Jan ’09!!

Melbourne
Chris, Gemma and I all arrived in Melbourne on 7th April. These were people I worked with in Sydney who were also laid off. Kenty joined us a week later after a quick trip back to England. Finally after 5 months, Flora turned up in Melbourne on 30th April! Unfortunately, she booked her flight to Australia for 19th April, but to Sydney as that was where I was due to be until June. She spent a little time in Sydney before joining the fun in Melbourne!
With the long weekend for Easter looming upon our arrival, we got straight on the job hunt, visiting various agencies and searching through pages of job adverts in magazines and online. A hard day’s work looking for jobs was always awarded by an evening in the bars, getting to know the local area!
The Easter weekend involved long walks around Melbourne getting to know the city and checking out the architecture. There are so many random art pieces scattered throughout the city. On Easter Sunday we took a train out into the country where Kim (mate from camp) picked us up and drove us to a few wineries and then for a short walk at Badger Creek. We took a trip via Ramsey Street on the way back to the city! Easter Monday took us to Phillip Island to see the penguins returning from their time at sea, along with a visit to a wildlife park, a surfing beach and free pizza!

Since then, the job search has continued. We all managed to get a job with the same company, Victoria Electricity. This was an outbound call centre and our role was to call potential customers and get them to change provider. This has got to have been the worst job I have ever had! It wasn’t that I couldn’t do it, I managed 2 sales in my first full day. But each time I called someone I dreaded them answering because I knew most people would not even want to listen. I know myself I would not want to! After 2 days on the phones, we all left the job. We would rather be jobless than have to do that kind of work! At least I have learnt that telesales is not a career that I wish to pursue!

One of the great things about living in Melbourne is that Kim lives here. I met Kim back in 2004 my first summer at camp. We have each devoted our summers to Tecumseh since then. There have been a few occasions since I have arrived that we have met up, both out in the country where Kim lives and in the city. Trips out to the country include the Easter getaway; and a drive in turned normal cinema session to watch Fast and Furious. My involvement in making wedding invitations was well paid by home cooking and the ability to watch TV (somewhat of a luxury in the backpacker hostel world! Kim and Chris made it into the city once and joined us on a tour of a few city bars.
As for the weather in Melbourne... this city has the ability to go through four seasons in just one day. You can wake up and the rain will be pouring down, then after taking a shower the sun will be shining with bright blue skies! The temperatures have dropped considerably compared to Sydney. Over one night the temperature dropped to the teens from the mid twenties. Right now it is turning to winter, and the temperatures are very similar to England. Bring on the summer, only 2 months away, and the beauty of following the summer around the globe!

Future Plans?
With just over one month left in Australia before a return to Camp Tecumseh, there are no definite plans for future travel. I have a return ticket from Melbourne to New York and I will be returning here in September. As for plans after this date………
…… only time will tell!

New photo links will be up in the next couple of days!

The Rise and Fall of Sydney

To begin - apologies for the lack of a posting for February. The time over the past 2 months has flown by, everyday I was due to update my blog and it never happened!

Here's what has been taking place since the last post:

Sydney

A lot of nights out, a lot a lot of drinking, many hours spent at the apple store, many trips to beaches - Bondi, Coogee and Manly, and many hours spent working in the hostel! I have also made it to Hillsong, and even took the 404 family to the live recording of the new Hillsong CD and DVD. We managed to go swimming on a couple of occasions once my job started on a saturday, the boys would take a trip to the pool of course stopping for a well earned beer on the way home! Many late nights were spent at Cheers bar until 6am watching 6 nations rugby, in fact the England Ireland game I managed to get stuck in the back of an Irish bar and managed to get out alive!

The 404 Family

After living in the Base hostel for a week, I managed to get hold of a work for accommodation position, in fact I have taken on many roles such as kitchen cleaning, bed changing and serving breakfast so that I don't have to pay rent. This led to my decision of staying put in the hostel rather than renting a house. This means I have lived in Sydney rent free for 2 months! I still live in the same 10 bed dorm I originally moved into, but thankfully managed to move into a bottom bunk quite soon after arriving. Over the past 2 months, there have been a few more long termers that stayed in my room, 404. We formed our own family and spent many hours together. Sarah, Jamie (special), Tom, Leanne, Zoey, Vicki, Mat, Panda and I have all enjoyed being woken at stupid o'clock in the morning if not participating in a night out! We are all from either England or Wales and there is a definate difference between the 2 natonalities! In March, 1 by 1, some of the family members have moved on and continued their travels but each one has a memorial 'goon box sign' as a reminder of their 404 experience. They are simply goon boxes opened and turned inside out and big letters relating to a specific person and an embarassing story they have to tell!

Work

I was offered a job at a restaurant called Bondi Pizza at the end of January. It was a new restaurant and I was due to be a waiter when it opened. The opening date was put off and off and I believe they eventually opened at the end of March, but before they had the chance, I was offered numerous other jobs through an agency. Most of these jobs I didn't say yes to in time, or were cancalled before they could even begin. However, I was eventually offered a job at a call centre and started work on 27th February. The money was finally coming in and I could enjoy Sydney more and more...... Until April 2nd, the campaign we had all been hired for ended March 31st and they let almost 30 people go in the space of 3 days. I was one of them.... So what now? well there was talk by a few of us who were let go while drinking to commisserate that we should go to Melbourne, it was time for a change, and finding a job in Sydney would be like starting from scratch again so why not do it somewhere else. Look out for the next post to find out how well that goes!

The future plans as now...

Sking is now not going ahead, so after camp, I will be returning to Australia and as for after that... only time will tell!

There are also many more pictures that have been uploaded by people other than myself, if you have access, check it out, otherwise you'll have to wait until I'm home!

January 2009... what a month!

I have travelled over 2,500miles during January, covered 2 states, stayed in 8 hostels and 2 houses and experienced temperatures up to 41 degrees.

I have also started a journal by hand, which is a lot more detailed than this blog, I'm sure you will all enjoy reading it when I eventually make it home.

As for where I have been this month, here is a little summary:
Cairns - 2nd January to 9th January.
OZ Experience Coach trip from Cairns to Sydney - 9th January to 20th January.
Sydney - 20th January to present.

In this blog I aim to inform you of the highlights of the trip so far. So here we go....

CAIRNS
I stayed with Dan, a mate from uni and his fiance for a week at the beginning of the month. I spent lots of time visiting the lagoon on the ocean front. Swimming in the ocean was not possible due to the stinger season, plus the beach is inhabited by crocodiles in Cairns!! The temperature in Cairns was constantly high, but very humid with it. this meant feeling like a constant sticky mess! We went out for a special dinner where we ate great food and enjoyed an aboriginal show, showing us how they used to live, work and play. It was great to catch up with Dan, and I will be visiting Cairns again in June 2010 for the marriage! Looking forward to it! :)

OZ EXPERIENCE
I chose to move away from the idea of fruit picking. I decided that I didn't need to stay in Australia for more than one year. There is so much more of the world to see and I reckon I can see all of Australia I want to see within the one year. With this decision made, I made plans for Sydney where I would try and find work. When planning how to get there I decided to visit the Whitsunday Islands and take a sailing trip. The best way of combining that and transport to Sydney, advised by Flora, was to go on OZ Experience. The service allowed you to chose where to stop, how long to stay in a certain place for and gave the opportunity to meet other backpackers on the way.

The plan was to stop at Magnetic Island, Airlie Beach (Whitsunday sailing
trip), Rainbow Beach (Fraser Island trip), Byron Bay and Sydney. However, this all changed due to the cancellation of my sailing trip. I have that and the Fraser Island trip on hold and I intend heading back up the coast in June to do those. This change of plan meant that from Airlie Beach I headed straight for Sydney, flying through the stops on the way. Despite the complications, lots happened, here are just some of the highlights...

Crocodile farm, check out the pictures... awesome animals but very dangerous!
Hostel on the beach on Magnetic Island

The rain poured down on Airlie Beach while I was there, but we enjoyed the night life!
Even though my sailing trip was can
celled, the weather was terrible due to it being wet season and the cyclone present in the area. I look forward to better weather when I return!
Visited a Cattle station and enjoyed goat meat, and a beef roast, rode a mechanical bull and learnt about the cattle industry.
Visited some beautiful beaches, though only saw them last th
ing in the evening and first thing in the morning between bus journeys.
Went to SURF CAMP!!! I loved this part of the trip, we had a 2 hour lesson and within that time I managed to stand on my board many times, I can't wait to get to the
beach again and try it out once more!

SYDNEY
Arrival into Sydney was 10 days earlier than planned, but this was to be my home for the next 5 months. The new plan to stay here until June, heading back up the coast for a short trip before flying to America for camp. On arrival in Sydney, the job hunt began. I stayed with another friend from uni, Paula in Bondi for the first few days before moving to a hostel in the city. I spent many hours in the apple store (where this blog will is beginning posted from) as they supply free internet, which I intend taking full advantage of until they throw me out! The hours were spent job hunting. I must have applied to almost 100 jobs since arriving and not many of them reply. I had an offer for a new restaurant opening in Bondi, Bondi Pizza. At the end of January, I was waiting for a call with information on training and opening dates. So check out next month for news on a job...

I visited Hillsong in Sydney and decided to join the church and go to the services weekly. It is a huge venue and the worship session is almost like a concert. The teaching is also very good with very passionate speakers!

The 26th January was AUSTRALIA DAY, and we celebrated it in style! Two people I met on my way down the coast were in Sydney for this day, Rachel and Sarah. We headed out at 11am and did not return home until 2am. We carried a bag of goon (box wine) around in a backpack and drank it throughout the day. We attended various events in Hyde Park and at the Rocks. Bollywood dancing, rock music and we even saw Alvin and the Chipmunks! The rain started to pour down on Sydney at about 4pm, but we continued to party, dancing and even enjoying a BBQ in the rain! We were equipped with many flags! Flags on sticks, flag tattoos on our faces, a flag towel and my flag shorts! It was a great day!!

IN OTHER NEWS
My US visa was granted which means I will definitely be attending camp and getting paid this year!

I'm sure there is so much more I have not told you about this month, but you can check out the journal for more! This month was very eventful and I can't promise that next month will be as exciting, but hopefully, if I have a job, there will be some tales to pass on.

An update on the future....

February - June in Sydney
June - a short trip back up the coast
June - September at camp
September - October back in Australia travelling around the rest of the country (plus Kim's wedding)
October - March working in Canada
March - ? Travelling through New Zealand and Asia on route to the UK.

These plans are subject to change but check in next month when the plans could completely change!

Please visit the following links for photos of this month, there are lots of photos that will hopefully make sense after reading this blog!

ENJOY, and remember to check out next month!

December 2008

I have been in the country now for almost a month and loving every moment of it! It took about a week to get over the jet lag, and up to that point, every time I got into a car I instantly fell asleep!
Some of the events in the first few weeks included the following:
A basketball game between Gold Coast Blaze (the local team) and a team from Townsville.
Spending time at Marthas chruch on previous sundays and for Christmas events. This is where you can find local celebrities (as shown by a previous post!)!
Lots of coffee at Zarraffas! They do very good drinks other than coffee. We seem to spend a lot of time here catching up with Marthas family, or her friends who have come home from overseas for the festive season! Her friends live in UK, Peru, Canada and other places in Australia.
Martha and her sister patrol the beach on occasion as volunteer lifesavers with their surf club. I spent an afternoon with them on the beach one sunday.
The Sunday before Christmas we ventured down to Burleigh to watch the Christmas Carols and fireworks, however, we arrived too late and missed it all. Instead we watched the moon rising over the ocean, so not all was lost!
I have been able to catch up with an old Tecumsehrian! Calie and I have made numerous trips including Panaroma View, Christmas shopping and Zorbing! It's been great to see her again after her time spent at camp in 2006.
A trip down to the border of Queensland and New South Wales was enjoyed last week in the immense heat. Thankfully the beach is never far away to cool off! There haven't been many days where I haven't taken a trip to the beach to cool down! Thanks Martha for driving!!
Christmas was a very strange occasion in the heat, but very much enjoyed! Santa made an appearance on the beach, and the hat from Santa was by request, worn on the beach!
The New Year Celebrations were in one of Marthas friends back yards with a BBQ and beer of course! We celebrated at midnight by watching fireworks, and featuring on BBC Radio Lincolnshire! When the party finished we headed to another of Marthas friends, JD, where we would be staying. Here the party continued, with numerous calls abroad and a trip to Broadwater. Unfortuantely, the beach was just a little too far to visit at 2am.
